Wolves want £1m for Celtic target Leigh Griffiths

CELTIC have been told to come up with a bid that tops £1 million if they are serious about signing Scotland international striker Leigh Griffiths from Wolves.

Wolves are adamant that they want in excess of £1 million for Griffiths after Celtic had a second bid of £500,000 – rising to £750,000 with add-ons – turned down.

Last night, Celtic manager Neil Lennon insisted “there has been no further movement either way” and added: “I’m not saying the deal is dead by any means but we will see over the next day or two whether we go back with another bid.”

But Wolves’ manager Kenny Jackett has hinted that he still expects the deal to go through before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline.

“Celtic are very interested and their manager’s comments seem to give him high praise,” said Jackett.

“Neil Lennon rates Leigh. Leigh also has children up in Scotland and that’s also a big factor. There’s been more talk and we’ll see where that goes. The chairman [Steve Morgan] and the chief executive [Jez Moxey] have been handling that side of it.

“There will be a valuation for a player who is 23 years old, a very good goalscorer and an international as well.”

Griffiths is the leading scorer at Molineux with 13 goals, but he has slipped out of Jackett’s plans in recent weeks and has not even got off the bench for the last two matches, against Bristol City and Oldham.

Despite the speculation over his future, Jackett insists that he would have used Griffiths against Oldham had the need arose.

“I was prepared to use him even though there was further dialogue and, perhaps, another bid,” he said.
