Referee named for Old Firm clash between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox

John Beaton will take charge of the hotly-contested fixture

John Beaton has been named as the referee for this Sunday's Old Firm encounter at Ibrox.

Rangers host their arch-rivals Celtic desperately seeking a victory that would keep their slim title hopes alive.

The official last took charge of an Old Firm contest on December 29, 2018.

Rangers won the match 1-0 thanks to a Ryan Jack goal, but the game was shrouded in controversy with Alfredo Morelos involved in a number of potential red-card incidents with Celtic players.

After the player escaped retrospective punishment as it was said Beaton had witnessed all the incidents at the time, Celtic released a statement calling for Beaton to explain his decision. The whistler was then the victim of alleged online threats.

His last match involving either side also contained some controversy as Beaton missed a handball in the build up to Killie's equaliser.

He last took charge of a Celtic game as they thumped St Johnstone 3-0 at McDiarmid Park on January 29.
