Celtic chasing Alessandro Del Piero

Celtic boss Neil Lennon is in the race to sign Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero ahead of tomorrow night’s transfer deadline.

• Scottish club joins the hunt for 37-year-old free agent

• Sion and FC Sydney also interested in signing legend.

The Hoops are on a high after battling past Swedish side Helsingborgs to qualify for the Champions’ League group stages last night, but Lennon is said to be aiming to strengthen his squad with Del Piero.

Lennon believes plenty of players will be keen to join Celtic with an immediate future in European football and is keen to strike while the iron is hot.

The Celtic manager has so far been quiet on the interest in Del piero, however, he will go to chief executive Peter Lawwell and ask for new deals for some of those who contributed to what he described as the best night of his managerial career.

“We will have a couple lined up and hopefully we can get the medicals done,” he said.

“I don’t know how many. My mind has been occupied for last night’s game.

“There could be bundles coming in, all wanting to jump on the bandwagon but first and foremost my priority is to the players already here.

“I want to speak to Peter about rewarding some of them, maybe with new contracts. I think they have thoroughly deserved them.

“Some have played way beyond the expectation of them when we brought them in and we want to reward them.

“They have been very good for me so I want to be good for them.”
