Ibrox and Celtic Park in world’s top 100 stadiums

Celtic Park ranked the highest out of the three Scottish grounds, coming in at 11th on the list, one spot above the Estadio da Luz and one place behind the Allianz Arena.

Rangers’ home was selected in 30th, ahead of such notables arenas as the Stadio Olimpico and Emirates Stadium.

Hampden Park sat at number 51, a massive 48 spots behind Wembley Stadium.

La Bombonera, in Buenos Aires, home of Boca Juniors was the winner in first place.

The magazine cited the atmosphere of Celtic Park at European and Old Firm contests as the reason for the lofty status, saying: “No aficionado of football atmospheres can truly say they’ve savoured the best until they enjoy a trip to Paradise – particularly for an Old Firm civil war, where the volume can become truly hair-raising.”

Of Ibrox, the magazine said: “Ibrox – it means “badger ford” in Gaelic – may have housed a Scottish fourth-tier club more recently than a top-flight team but Rangers have won 52 of their 54 league titles at the venue, which can produce an atmosphere unrivalled by most British stadiums… particularly on derby day.”

The monthly publication spent months corresponding with reporters and editors from anound the world, judging stadiums on “history, atmosphere, capacity, architecture and environment”, to make up the final list.

Although, as far as Scottish football goes, capacity seems to trump all others. Supporters of Hearts and Hibernian will justifiably feel their grounds have been disregarded for lack of size or club status.
