The newly-promoted Barclays Premier League club formally stepped up their pursuit of the 25-year-old Parkhead forward – who scored two goals in Celtic’s 3-0 Scottish Cup final triumph over Hibs last month – by submitting the undisclosed bid, but it was swiftly turned down.

It is understood Celtic value Hooper at around £7m although the Englishman, who joined from Scunthrope for £2.4m in 2010, only has one year left on his contract and has so far failed to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Celtic also fended off a series of bids, which rose to around £5m, from Norwich City during the January transfer window, but the Canaries have now cooled their interest.
