The 27-year-old’s converted a superb volley to secure a 2-0 win over the minnows on Tuesday night and send the Super Eagles into the group stage of African qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

However, there was an added bonus for Ambrose and fellow goalscorer, Moses Simon, who both collected a five-figure bounty for finding the net. The $20,000 (£13,000) incentive for each goalscorer was announced by River State Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike during a visit to the Nigerian training camp earlier this week – and Ambrose duly delivered on matchday.

He has endured a mixed season for Celtic, including a disastrous showing as the Parkhead side threw away a 2-0 lead against Fenerbahce in the Europa League then losing his place for the subsequent Molde match.

However, he has impressed at international level. Working under Nigeria legend Sunday Oliseh, he has made the centre-back role his own and helped the Super Eagles to back-to-back clean sheets in the two-legged tie against Swaziland.
