The 26-year-old signed a four-year deal subject to international clearance last night after completing a medical in Glasgow.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon said earlier in the day that, if all went well, Boerrigter would be in contention for the game against the Swedish champions and waxed lyrical about his attributes.

“He is the type of player we have been looking for, for a while,” said Lennon. “He is a very fast, direct, left-footed player who has goals in him with his left and right foot.

“He is also very powerful. He has good experience and he has played at a high level for the last two or three years.”

After reaching the last 16 of the competition last season, Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew is looking for more of the same and realises the importance of the tie against the Swedes.

He said: “We enjoyed the Champions League last year but to get there you need to win ties like this.

“It will be a tough match and we will all need to be up for it.

“We know how big it is for our season. Everyone involved at the club wants to be involved in the Champions League again so we will be doing all we can to be there.”
