Celtic sign striker Jo Inge Berget on loan

Berget will stay at Parkhead until January and has the chance to prove himself after Celtic sold striker Tony Watt to Standard Liege yesterday. He has four caps for Norway and previously played for Molde, Lyn and Stromsgodset in his homeland, plus Udinese in Italy.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila previously signed Berget on loan whilst manager of Stromsgodset and has now made him his second signing of the summer after goalkeeper Craig Gordon. “I am delighted to join Celtic and I’m looking to make the very best of this great opportunity,” the player told the Glasgow club’s website.

“I know what a magnificent club Celtic is and what the club means to the supporters – it is a real privilege to be here.

“I also know the manager very well and I am delighted to be teaming up with him again and, of course, the great squad of players at the club.”

Deila added: “I’m really pleased that we have been able to add Jo to our squad. I know his qualities and I am sure he can add something new to the team.

“He is a player who will work hard and give everything to the team. I hope he can enjoy a successful time at Celtic.”

As Berget arrived, Celtic’s back-up goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska admitted he is puzzled why his club haven’t spent a single penny in the transfer market this summer and insists they miss Rangers in the top flight.

The 32-year-old is likely to be on the bench again against his former club Legia tomorrow night. He is looking forward to going back to Poland, but admits he is surprised by Celtic’s lack of transfer activity this summer, with only Gordon being signed so far on a free transfer.

He said: “We have a new coach, Ronny Deila, and he has introduced new tactics, but we’ve not yet been involved in a serious match to test them. We beat a team from Iceland without any hassle, so we will get our first real test this week.

“In our team, Georgios Samaras left because the club didn’t offer him a new contract. For  the first time since I’ve been at Celtic in almost five years, the club has not bought one player this summer.

“Every year something has happened, but now there is silence. We have played two years in a row in the Champions League group stages and we have 40,000 season ticket holders, so any rumour about the poor  financial condition of the club is probably exaggerated. And without Rangers, the league is not what it once was.”
