Celtic shirt signed by Andy Murray sold for £7k

A CELTIC strip signed by tennis ace Andy Murray has sold for £7,000 after an online charity auction.

Andy, 28, penned his autograph on the personalised Hoops top during a visit to Celtic Park before leading Great Britain to victory in their Davis Cup tie against Australia.

The top is emblazoned with Murray 1 on the back of it and was sold off by the Celtic FC Foundation to aid refugees in Europe.

The unique piece of sporting memorabilia was put up for grabs on Ebay and attracted 41 bids before the auction closed on Sunday night and it was snapped up by an anonymous bidder.

The £7,000 will be given to people affected by the current refugee crisis through Celtic FC Foundation’s partnership with the British Red Cross in Glasgow and its Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal.

The Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal will support refugees and communities affected by the crisis across Europe, in neighbouring countries and the UK.

Last week dad-to-be Andy visited Celtic Park with his Davis Cup team-mates for a special crossbar challenge.

He led the GB Davis Cup Team to victory at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow by winning two singles matches and the doubles with brother Jamie.

Currently ranked No 3 in the world, Andy is the British No.1, 2012 US Open Champion, 2013 Wimbledon Champion and reigning Olympic Singles Champion.

With 35 career titles, he is Britain’s most successful tennis player of the Open era, the first Briton to reach 500 ATP match wins and his maiden grand slam title ended Great Britain’s lengthy wait for a male grand slam champion.

A Celtic spokesman said: “Celtic FC Foundation would like to thank Andy Murray for his wonderful support.”

Brian Clements, managing director McTear’s Auctioneers said: “Signed sports items can attract big money especially if the particular sportsperson is big news like Andy Murray.

“Murray is arguably the country’s top athlete and you could see from the Davis Cup matches just how popular he is. Timing is important in any auction and I’m sure the Celtic FC Foundation will be delighted they got the timing just right for this lot.”
