Match in Latvia abandoned for safety reasons

Celtic must wait to learn their Europa League opponents after the second qualifying round game between Latvian side Riga and Tre Fiori of San Marino was abandoned.

The Scottish champions are due to meet the winners of that tie in the third qualifying round next Thursday. The game in Riga was called off when strong winds raised concerns about the safety of the stadium.

Uefa announced on late on Thursday night that the match should be played at 8am BST on Friday because Tre Fiori have chartered a flight back to San Marino.

If it cannot be played, the Latvian side may have to forfeit the tie.

Uefa said in a statement: “Due to strong winds, the match was halted in the eighth minute to protect the safety of all persons involved in the game.

“After discussions involving the teams and local authorities, it was decided that the match would not resume on Thursday.

“Match rescheduled for 09:00 CET on Friday.”
