Competing in Serie A just over 10 years ago, the northern Italian outfit were relegated from Serie B in 2011, declared bankrupt, and now compete in Serie D after being ‘refounded’ in 2012 as Piacenza Calcio 1919.

But it is hoped that the working partnership with the Hoops will help boost I Biancorossi, with the possibility of some Celtic prospects gaining some experience in the Italian leagues.

Director General of Piacenza, Marco Sciano, told Piacencza24 that it was an ‘honour’ to agree the link.

“It is a true honour to shake hands on this partnership with Celtic, a bond that from today we will have the objective of develop and make money.

“The name Piacenza Calcio is well known and has an excellent reputation. We are definitely a young team and certainly we do not have the size of Celtic - one of the top five clubs in Europe - but I think we should aim higher.”

The link-up also opens the door to potential friendly matches between the two teams, and the possibility of Italian players travelling to Glasgow and Celtic starlets going in the opposite direction.

Piacenza has had a number of top players on its book in the past, including Italy’s fifth top goalscorer of all time and current AC Milan boss Filippo Inzaghi; his younger brother Simone Inzaghi; Juventus winger Simone Pepe and former Manchester United goalkeeper Massimo Taibi.

The club has secured a play-off spot in its bid to make it into the Lega Pro 2 system for the 2015/16 season.
