The Israel midfielder sustained the injury in the 3-0 Champions League defeat by AC Milan at Parkhead on Tuesday night.

Ahead of the Scottish Cup fourth-round clash with Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday, Lennon said: “Beram Kayal has broken a bone in his foot so he is going for a CT scan today to see if it requires a screw putting in.

“He will be out for six or seven weeks with that.”

The 25-year-old has been hit with a number of injury setbacks in the past, suffering a hernia injury that kept him out for three months in 2010, and in a match against Inverness CT in May the following year, the midfielder was substituted with suspected concussion and a fractured wrist following a collision with Ross Tokely.

He also missed four months of the 2011-12 season after undergoing ankle surgery following a heavy challenge from Rangers’ Lee McCulloch in the Old Firm match in December 2011.

Kayal has made 72 appearances for Celtic since his transfer from Maccabi Haifa in the summer of 2010, scoring twice.
