Ajax face Uefa action over objects thrown by fans

Fans were seen clashing with stewards in the moments following Celtic’s first goal in the Scottish champions’ 2-1 victory.

There were also reports claiming travelling supporters had ripped up seats and thrown them at fans sitting in the home sections.

While Police Scotland confirmed no Dutch fans were arrested during the game, Uefa have now decided to take action and a hearing will take place next month.

A spokesman said: “Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against AFC Ajax for crowd disturbances and throwing of objects (article 16 of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations) at last night’s Uefa Champions League match in Glasgow against Celtic FC.

“The case will be dealt with by the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body on 21 November.”

Celtic fans took to Twitter after the game to express their disgust at the actions of the Ajax supporters, while former Parkhead winger Bobby Petta, who scored against his compatriots when Celtic took on Ajax back in 2001, also went online to say: “Just got told ajax fans were attacking some celtic fans after the match !!! scandalous!!!”

Meanwhile, Ajax midfielder Christian Poulsen believes his team’s hopes of further Champions League process all but evaporated in Glasgow. The Danish international has now retrained his sights on what he feels is likely to be a head-to-head battle with Celtic for third place in Group H and relocation to the knockout phase of the Europa League.

“We knew that if we had a chance to finish second in the group we had to win at Celtic Park,” said Poulsen as he reflected on Ajax’s defeat.

“Now it is looking difficult to get through this group. There is still third place and the Europa League, which would also be good for Celtic or ourselves, but we now really need to beat them in Amsterdam in a couple of weeks.

“This game was really disappointing for us because, after Celtic started strongly in the first ten minutes, we controlled the game and got our passing game going. We had good possession, created chances but couldn’t score.

“It will be a different game in Amsterdam and perhaps we have to do something different. We have to create the same chances and score them this time.

“So far this season, we haven’t lost at home and we feel comfortable there. We will respect Celtic in the next game but we will have our fans behind us this time and that will make a difference.”

Poulsen’s team-mate Daley Blind believes Celtic were fortunate to claim all three points at Parkhead.

“They were a little bit lucky,” said the Dutch international left-back. “A draw would have been fair when you see the chances we had. Celtic don’t give a lot of chances away but we found the space to make some. But we got one goal at the end, which we really deserved, and it could be an important one if it comes down to the head-to-head record between Celtic and ourselves to decide something at the end of the group.

“I think we will beat them in Amsterdam. We are confident and we have a lot of trust in each other as a team. We believe in ourselves at home and it can be a really nice game for us.”
