The US were beaten by Mexico in the CONCACAF round five opener, and now find themselves pointless and bottom of the group after two games.

Johan Venegas gave Costa Rica the lead two minutes before half-time, and Jurgen Klinsmann’s side capitulated late on as Christian Bolanos scored in the 69th minute and on-loan Arsenal forward Joel Campbell bagged a three-minute brace to complete the rout.

The win sees Costa Rica top the six-team table with the only perfect record after two rounds of games.

Mexico lie second after a goalless draw with third-placed Panama.
