Celtic to be punished by Uefa over Palestine flags

Uefa have opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic for the flying of Palestine flags during the club's Champions League play-off tie with Israeli side Hapoel Beer-Sheva.

The home side won the contest 5-2 in front of their own fans, some of whom displayed Palestinian flags despite warnings it could lead to action from Europe’s governing body.

The raising of the flags is viewed as breaking Uefa laws regarding political messages at football grounds.

Uefa said: “Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Champions League play-offs, first leg, between Celtic FC and H. Beer-Sheva FC (5-2) played on 17 August in Glasgow (Scotland).”

Celtic will learn their punishment on 22 September. They have been punished 11 times since 2007, with fines totalling over £190,000.
