Butland plays down transfer talk

Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland insists talk of a summer move is not proving a distraction as the Olympic Games approach. The 19-year-old is considered one of the most sought-after young English prospects, with reported interest from Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton.

Despite his only first-team action coming during a loan spell with fourth-tier Cheltenham, Butland’s stock has risen rapidly since his inclusion in England’s Euro 2012 squad. The Bristol-born player has also been named in the Team GB squad for London 2012 – something that he insists has his undivided attention despite rumours circulating about his future.

“You can’t let it distract you,” he said. “It is all rumours until it becomes a necessity and it needs to happen. But for now, I am where I need to be. I need to play games at Birmingham and the rumours can carry on. They are no distraction for me.”

The teenager made 24 appearances for Cheltenham during last season’s stay and believes he owes a debt of gratitude to the club. “It is not often an 18-year-old goalkeeper plays in the Premier League or Championship so I knew last year I had to go out and get experience,” Butland said. “I would like to think that has helped put me in the position I am in now.”
