Broxburn time push to perfection

PIPPED at the post in last season’s promotion race, Broxburn have sneaked up on the rails this time around to snatch top spot in the Premier Division entering the home straight.

Last weekend’s 3-1 victory at Sauchie lifted Steve Pittman’s side above Tayport and Penicuik in the battle for two prized spots in the Super League.

Tomorrow they entertain Oakley, another of the team’s still in the hunt, then travel to Armadale in a fortnight’s time before ending the campaign at home to Penicuik.

“We’ve come with a good run,” said Broxburn secretary Jim Provan. “We had a blip at a time when we were struggling with injuries and that seemed to have put a dent in our promotion hopes.

“Indeed, at one point we were in a position where we were needing points to take us away from the relegation zone.

“But we’ve been able to grind out some wins and last Saturday at Sauchie was as good as we have played in a long time.

“We won that one without a recognised forward line as well – Sean Martin, who is 5ft nothing, and John Millar filling in up front.”

Former Hearts starlet Mark Cowan is available again this weekend, as is fellow striker John Jeffrey.

“Everyone is fit and raring to go,” added Provan, who is keeping his fingers crossed for a better end to this season’s promotion push than a year ago.

Then, Broxburn missed out on a step to the top flight after sitting at the top of the table for most of the season.

In other games tomorrow, Penicuik are at home to Glenrothes while Newtongrange entertain bottom-of-the-table Arniston.
