Brechin skipper Ewan Moyes eager to upset odds

BRECHIN City captain Ewan Moyes was dubbed “lucky to be alive” by doctors after he was struck by a car in June, yet staged a recovery in time to face Rangers on the opening day of the season.

So, the 23-year-old knows there is no such thing as “impossible” as the struggling Angus outfit aim to upset the odds and end Rangers’ 100 per cent league record tomorrow.

Four months ago, Moyes feared his career would be over as he lay in a hospital bed in Aberdeen. The former Hibernian youngster was hit by a car in the Granite City and flew across the bonnet, shattering the windscreen before being tipped head-first on to the road.

He sustained relatively minor injuries – 12 stitches to a laceration on his back, while his nose needed to be glued. He also had several cuts to his arms and tissue damage to his legs.

Moyes recalled: “The doctor told me I should just be thankful that I was still alive. I know how lucky I was. It was a terrifying experience. I remember panicking about whether I could feel my legs. My left leg had some feeling, but it was all a bit fuzzy and I could not tell straight away what the damage was.

“It was a relief when I was told I would be able to play again – in fact, it was a relief to be told I would be able to walk again.”

The accident meant Moyes was confined to rest for weeks and it set back his pre-season preparation, yet he managed to make a substitute appearance at Ibrox on 10 August.

However, the player admits he rushed back, and he would not subsequently play again until 28 September. Moyes is now relishing a proper crack at Rangers.

He continued: “I think I pushed my injury too hard to get back for the first Rangers game and said I was okay, but I wasn’t fit. I got an injection after that and decided there was no point in rushing things. It was frustrating, I had ankle and knee problems because of the impact, and niggling things that held me back.

“But I got my fitness back up and have started the last few matches, so I am back to where I want to be and I feel good.

“This will be a special occasion to be involved in – a full crowd and a great atmosphere and, after everything that happened in the summer, I will soak it up. My girlfriend, Stephanie, also has her mum coming over. She only visits from Ireland once a year and is being dragged to her first ever football match – so, no pressure.”

Moyes’ return to full fitness, however, has done little to halt a miserable run of form, with Ray McKinnon’s men without a win in their past six outings, sitting in seventh place in League 1.

On the contrary, Rangers have won every league match this season, scoring 34 goals in eight games. Nevertheless, Moyes said: “Rangers still haven’t been beaten, and hopefully someone has to beat them at some point. We will go in to the game with the belief that can be us. There is no reason why not. We have a great squad of players and, although the results have not gone our way yet, we are confident that will change very soon.”
