Third Division: Peterhead banish blues

Peterhead put their shock Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Deveronvale behind them to defeat visitors Berwick Rangers 1-0 and move into second spot on the 13-point mark, with idle top side Queen’s Park having a better goal difference.

The Borderers had chances early on with Paul Jarvie keeping the Blue Toon’s goal intact.

The deadlock was finally broken 13 minutes from time. Substitute Stephen Maguire’s first goal of the season proved to be the winner when the former East Stirling striker turned home a Bryan Deasley pass after a cute step-over from McAllister.

Manager Jim McInally was delighted, saying: “We were short of confidence after last week but hopefully we can now put the Deveronvale game behind us.”

Visiting manager Ian Little said: “We deserved a draw and had a couple of decisions not gone against us we would have got one.”

Montrose bounced back from their shock Scottish Cup defeat by Edinburgh City to defeat East Stirling 3-1 and send the Shire to the foot of the table.

The Gable Endies raced into a 3-0 first-half lead thanks to Leighton McIntosh, a David Gray penalty and Terry Masson. Craig Hume netted a late consolation.
