Ayr United 0 - 0 Morton: All square in nervous clash

A POINT apiece eased the relegation worries of both teams, with nerves obvious throughout the game as they enter the business end of the season.

Ayr, who have now extended their record of only having lost once at home in the league in their last nine games since the end of November, created very little in the first period.

But, for all they lacked as an attacking force, they almost went in at the interval in front after a long ball from Chris Smith caused panic for Morton’s veteran goalkeeper Alan Combe, who raced from goal in 43 minutes under pressure from Keigan Parker. But the keeper managed to recover to clear after the striker appeared to have been gifted an open goal.

Morton passed up a glorious chance three minutes after the restart when Archie Campbell sent in a low cross from the right for Peter MacDonald to lay the ball back into the path of Grant Evans, but the defender fired over from 12 yards.

Ayr almost snatched victory in 73 minutes when Eddie Malone saw his a header cleared off the line by MacDonald.

And, just a minute later, Andy Graham was on the line to clear from Andy Geggan’s 12-yard shot after Combe spilled the ball.
