Aberdeen's Kenny McLean to be called up to Scotland squad

Kenny McLean will be rewarded for his part in Aberdeen's title challenge when he receives his maiden call-up to the senior Scotland squad today.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who has been instrumental in the Pittodrie club’s pursuit of champions Celtic, will be in one of the two separate squads Gordon Strachan names today for the challenge matches against Czech Republic and Denmark at the end of the month.

It is understood McLean, previously capped at under-19 and under-21 level, will be in the party which will travel to Prague for the first game against the Czechs on 24 March.

Strachan also has a decision to make over Celtic’s highly-rated left-back Kieran Tierney, who has been widely tipped for promotion to the senior squad.

The 18-year-old has been a stand-out for Ronny Deila’s team this season and is still eligible for Scot Gemmill’s Scotland under-19 squad who face a final round of qualifiers in Croatia this month as they bid to reach the Uefa finals in Germany in July.

Rangers captain Lee Wallace, who earned the most recent of his eight caps in 2013, is also a contender to provide competition for the left-back role and could be recalled by Strachan, either for Czech fixture or the game against Denmark at Hampden on 29 March.
