Five Stirling players selected for Team GB

hannah McCook, the newly-crowned British Universities Women’s champion, is among five Stirling students selected to fly the British flag in this year’s World Universities’ Championships in the Czech Republic.

Five of the seven spots in the GB team for the event at Liberec on 2-7 July have been claimed by Stirling players on the back of their strong showing in this week’s British Championships at West Lancs.

McCook, who beat Gemma Bradbury of St Andrews on a card play-off to claim her title after the pair had tied on 305 in Lancashire, will join forces in the women’s team with fellow Stirling player Eilidh Briggs and York’s Charlotte Austwick, with Bradbury having to settle for the reserve spot.

The men’s team is also testament to the excellent golf programme at the Central Scotland campus, with three Stirling players – Jack McDonald, Graeme Robertson and David Booth – being selected along with Plymouth’s Ben Stow.

Adding to the strong Scottish flavour, Rob Macpherson has been appointed as team manager for the event while assisting him will be Craig Towsend, the performance coach at the University of Exeter.

With McDonald winning the men’s title at West Lancs, it was another good week for Stirling, where the combined efforts of performance coach Dean Robertson and ladies’ coach Lesley Mackay are continuing to reap rich rewards, not only on the varsity scene but also on the Scottish stage.

Last weekend, for example, Robertson won the Craigmillar Park Open, the opening event on this season’s Scottish Order of Merit.
