Five Lothians cyclists win titles in show of power

Cyclists from clubs in the Lothians continued their strong start to the season with wins in different parts of the country over the weekend.

Jennifer Taylor (Equipe Velo Ecosse) landed the women’s title at the Tour of the Meldons at Eddleston. The race incorporated the Scottish Time Trial Championship. Taylor was more than two minutes quicker than the runner-up, Anda-Jay Burgess, of the Fife-based Sandy Wallace Cycles team, while Toni McIntosh (Ayr Roads) took bronze.

It was a fruitful day out for Sandy Wallace Cycles riders, with Alan Thomson taking gold in the men’s ahead of his team-mate Silas Goldsworthy by eight seconds, with Arthur Doyle (Dooleys RT) in third. Alex Kinsley (Edinburgh RC) posted his second win in 
successive weekends, claiming the junior award.

Elsewhere, Lewis Oliphant won the Nick Hardy Memorial Road Race in Dundee. The VC Edinburgh rider broke away 15 miles from the end of the 50-mile event and raced home more than a minute clear. Ross Crook (Edinburgh RC) edged out Colin May (VC Edinburgh) for the runner-up spot. Gemma Neill of Livingston-based Pedal Power won the women’s prize.
