Fishing: Leadburn comp is not to miss

With many of the bigger fisheries coming to the close of another memorable season, it's time now to look at the smaller waters which remain open over the winter.

There are several open matches for the competition angler and Leadburn Manor's competition next Saturday is worth consideration. Entry is 25 and is catch and release only on barbless or debarbed hooks. It is an 8.30am for 9.00am start and booking is advisable, but not essential, on 07775812794.

Prizes are for first and second place as well as the biggest fish. I was at Leadburn recently to see the place again and what a difference with caf and seating completed. However, the biggest difference was the quality of the fish.

I took one - a rainbow at more than 6lb and a brown trout well into double figures. Fishing only a single fly on a midge tip line some of the takes were fantastic. I was broken on two other occasions on a black tadpole variant and came away thinking I had died and gone to heaven.

It should prove to be a cracking competition.
