Festival season in Pitreavie as primary title race hots up

FESTIVALS: Two indoor hockey events for local primary schools in Dunfermline and West Fife took place earlier this month as part of the Primary School Sports Festivals.

In the first of the tournaments, 14 teams from nine schools took part at Pitreavie Indoor Centre.

Two pitches were in operation which meant four teams were in action at one time, allowing longer games to be played in a very boisterous atmosphere. After a close final Cairneyhill PS A overcame Donibristle PS B 1-0 to emerge the winners while Townhill PS took third place after beating Masterton PS 4-0.

At the second event, 13 teams from nine schools were involved at the same venue.

After some great action the matches for the medal places were also close affairs with both ties needing sudden-death to see who would finish where.

In the gold medal match, Commercial PS’s A team overcame Touch PS, while McLean PS clinched the bronze from Duloch PS A.

The hockey tournaments were just the latest events of the Primary Schools Sports Festivals for 2011 with the series of competitions catering for P4 to P7 pupils in Dunfermline and West Fife.

Over 2,000 pupils from 35 local primary schools have entered the 15 Festival series for this calendar year, organised by Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council in partnership with Fife Council’s Active Fife team, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, Sport Tayside & Fife and supported by the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust.

The long-established series traditionally runs from February to December, involving seven sports – athletics, badminton, bowls, cricket, hockey, pop lacrosse and tennis.

Some competitions are used as qualifying events for regional and national events.

Local clubs provided all the coaches, referees and officials and, in most cases, the necessary equipment, while some local high school pupils are recruited by Active Schools to help out on the day.

This year students from the Fife School of Sport have used the Festivals for practical training as part of their course.

This year so far events have been held in a number of the sports and here is just a flavour of how things have been going before the indoor hockey days.

The outdoor hockey event was held at Duloch Leisure Centre in May with 16 teams from 12 schools taking part.

In that one Townhill PS overcame relative newcomer Duloch PS 2-1 in the final while Donibristle PS edged out Pittencrieff PS ‘A’ 1-0 to take third.

In September nearly 300 pupils were at the Pitreavie Stadium for the athletics event.

Events in shot putt, long jump, 100 metres and relay for P6 and P7 pupils all took place.

The final result saw Townhill PS take the title with McLean PS second and Dalgety Bay PS third.

Indoor athletics takes place in the coming weeks before the overall winners are crowned.

In 2010 Donibristle PS won the overall title for the fourth year in a row with Townhill PS in second and Inverkeithing PS in third.
