Ferguslie edge out Freuchie in thriller

YOUNG Ferguslie batsman Michael English described his side's remarkable triumph over Freuchie as the most nail-biting experience of his life.

The Fifers appeared to be on course for a precious home success against the Paisley side. However, the tide turned and pro Prave Mullick completed the job with an lbw shout that was answered in the affirmative.

Ferguslie had posted a tally of 179 all out, thanks mainly to a gutsy innings from another of their youthful crop, Jamey Carruthers, who struck a fine 42 to help set a tantalising target. He then played his part with the ball, bagging three Fifers' scalps. But with Steve Rowley at the crease, it appeared that the efforts of Carruthers could be in vain. However, with Rowley unbeaten on 60, Mullick did the business when it mattered. English said: "It was tremendously exciting. I don't think I have ever been so nervous or tense."

Dumfries kept up their impressive surge at the head of the title race with their fully expected win against SMRH at Inverleith. Andrew Brock led the hosts' resistance with 44 not out as they reached a respectable 146-8. However, with pro Andy Parkinson (51no) and Tom McBride (35) looking useful, Dumfries made the runs in only 34 overs and with eight wickets to spare.

Corstorphine were on the end of a 71-run drubbing by West Lothian at Boghall. Kruger van Wyk (76) and Babes Fleming (49) helped to guide the home side to 226-7 before they sent Corstorphine hurtling to 155 all out in the 42nd over.

Elsewhere, Hasan Akram was again in the runs for Weirs, but his 68 couldn't stave off defeat by Imans Edinburgh at Albert Park. Renfrew beat Kelburne at King George V Playing Field.
