Farah targets fifth win in a row in London 10k

Double Olympic champion Mo Farah will target a fifth straight victory in the Bupa London 10k road race on 27 May, event ­organisers have revealed.

Farah has been an ever-present in the event since it started in 2008, finishing third in the inaugural race, then winning four in a row, also setting British records in 2009 and 2010. The 30-year-old won in 29 minutes 21 seconds last year ahead of brilliant victories over 5,000m and 10,000m at the London Olympics, a golden double he will aim to repeat at the World Championships in Moscow.

Farah’s main threat should come from former training partner Scott Overall, who was third 12 months ago, although it remains to be seen if he has recovered from the knee injury which forced him out of the Virgin London Marathon in April.

Amy Whitehead leads the women’s field on her debut in the event. The 34-year-old was 13th in the London Marathon, the second Briton home behind Susan Partridge.

Whitehead will line up against Steph Twell, the former world junior 1,500m champion and three-time European junior cross country winner who will contest the Westminster Mile just 24 hours earlier.

Twell is targeting a track comeback following her injury-enforced absence from last year’s Olympics and will start as one of the favourites to land the title with her current personal best of 32mins 35secs.
