Ferguson on target as Birmingham extend unbeaten run to 15 games

Birmingham stretched their unbeaten run to 15 matches as they battled their way into the FA Cup fifth round.

Alex McLeish's side led 2-0 at the break thanks to fine goals from Christian Benitez and Barry Ferguson. But after Everton substitute Leon Osman had hauled the home team back into the match in the second period, the Midlanders were forced to defend for their lives to advance to the next round.

Scotland forward Ross McCormack ended his scoring drought as Cardiff scored twice in stoppage time to secure their place in the fifth round. The Championship clash looked destined to finish all square, but goals from former Rangers winger Chris Burke and McCormack put the Bluebirds through. Jay Bothroyd had put the home side in front but Michael Morrison and Dany N'Guessan turned the game on its head. Peter Whittingham's 17th goal of the season drew Cardiff level 19 minutes from time and with time running out Burke and then McCormack's first goal of the season stunned Leicester.

West Brom 4 Newcastle Utd 2

A penalty in each half from former Livingston midfielder Graham Dorrans helped Albion to victory. Jonas Olsson opened the scoring before Dorrans' first spot-kick and Andy Carroll then clawed one back for Newcastle after the break. But the Magpies had defender Ryan Taylor dismissed as Dorrans hit his second penalty and Jerome Thomas was able to clinch the win with a late fourth. Carroll grabbing his second in stoppage time.

Accrington Stanley 1 Fulham 3

Fulham booked their place in the fifth round after overcoming a spirited Accrington Stanley side who were reduced to ten men in the first half. Erik Nevland but Fulham ahead but the League Two side equalised within four minutes through top scorer Michael Symes. Second-half strikes from Damien Duff and Zoltan Gera sealed victory for Fulham.

Aston Villa 3 Brighton 2

Villa overcame a first-half scare to keep alive their hopes of a Wembley double at the expense of the League One strugglers. The Carling Cup finalists were rocked when Nathan Delfouneso's early goal was cancelled out by Tommy Elphick shortly before half-time. But Martin O'Neill's team dominated the second period and further goals from acting skipper Ashley Young and Fabian Delph ensured their win before Nicky Forster's late reply.

Bolton 2 Sheffield United 0

In a match low on chances, the goals proved decisive in securing new Bolton manager Owen Coyle's first win. However, another good display from South Korean Lee Chung-yong apart, there was little else to cheer. Coyle can thank Gretar Steinsson and Johan Elmander for the goals which were enough to overcome the Championship side. Iceland defender Steinsson fired a shot through keeper Mark Bunn's legs from a narrow angle after the interval and substitute Elmander converted from a similar position late on.

Wolves 2 Crystal Palace 2

Ronald Zubar's sublime 84th-minute volley spared Wolves' blushes as they twice came from behind. Alan Lee and Darren Ambrose had twice handed the Championship side the lead at the start of each half, with David Jones initially levelling matters.

Derby County 1 Doncaster Rovers 0

A late rocket from substitute Jay McEveley earned Derby a win with two minutes left. The Scotland international left-back benefited from Robbie Savage dispossessing John Oster and riffled a left-foot shot into the far top corner from the edge of the box.

Notts County 2 Wigan Athletic 2

Notts County were seven minutes away from causing a major upset. The financially-troubled League Two club were two up at half time thanks to Lee Hughes and Ben Davies. But Jason Scotland and Ben Watson hit back for Premier League Wigan to force a replay.

Portsmouth 2 Sunderland 1

A brilliant brace from Nigerian midfielder John Utaka cancelled out Darren Bent's early strike to win it for Porstsmouth, whose supporters protested against the board prior to kick-off.

Reading 1 Burnley 0

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored three minutes from time as Reading produced an upset.

Southampton 2 Ipswich 1

Southampton defender Wayne Thomas crashed in a superb long-range strike and Michail Antonio tapped in a second to win it for League Two Saints.
