Dyer straits as Monarchs star can’t pay £1500 repair bill

And Dyer, who travels to Redcar Bears tonight for the team’s restaged Premier League clash against the Teessiders, admitted: “It’s been a disaster for me and it was the last thing I needed to happen.”

Schramm careered into Dyer going down the back straight and his reckless challenge has left the 21-year-old Australian with a hefty repair bill which he cannot pay. Said Dyer: “He caused about £1500 worth of damage, my push bar, sprocket, chain, and clutch were all wrecked, my bike was almost a write off. Thankfully the actual engine suffered just minimal damage and that was a relief because it had just recently been fully serviced.”

Schramm escaped disqualification from the race because Dyer remained upright but he reflected: “It has been such a costly experience, his footrest caught my chain which snapped and destroyed everything else, it capped what was a terrible meeting for me anyway.

“Coming across to try my luck in the Premier League was not easy to begin with, and when something like this happens it pushes you even further behind. I will just have to try and pay the bill somehow unless somebody comes forward with assistance, which would be hugely appreciated.”

Dyer is struggling to pick up points at present and his confidence has hit rock bottom. It’s understood he contemplated quitting Monarchs to return home but was persuaded to change his mind by one of his sponsors.

But Dyer confessed, bluntly: “I have been pretty crap lately. I need to learn how to ride a bike because I feel I have dropped back a bit. Even when I do pick up something I’m not earning enough cash for the things I need.”

Dyer has pinched bits from his second bike to ride a patched up main machine this evening and said: “I will just have to wait and see how things turn out, hopefully my performances will start to pick up for me again, I desperately need to start scoring better points, not just for myself but for the team.”

In stark contrast, team-mate Craig Cook is currently a hot property and his consistent form did not go unnoticed in the Elite League as he rejoined Belle Vue Aces at the weekend in a doubling-up capacity.

Cook wasn’t looking to move back into the top flight at the start of this season but his high scores and increased level of professionalism convinced him to have a change of heart. And he made a belter of a debut for the Aces on Monday, scoring nine points as he helped the Manchester outfit defeat Wolverhampton 54-40 to record their first win of 2012

Cook also got the better of Swedish Grand Prix winner Freddie Lindgren, not once, but twice, prompting Aces team manager Jim Lynch to comment: “Craig was absolutely fantastic and he certainly won’t forget the night he beat Lindgren on two occasions.

“The people at Edinburgh told me Craig was riding well and I also read he wanted another chance in the Elite League. Now he’s got it and I couldn’t have asked for a better start from him.”

Needless to say, Cook will be a key performer against the Bears as Monarchs attempt to secure their first away win of the season. Redcar, who signed Lee Smart to replace broken collarbone victim Mark Jones, dropped a home point against Rye House Rockets last week but quickly retrieved it after losing by just two points 46-44 at Ipswich Witches on Friday.
