Dumfries Colts 13 - 27 Currie Colts: Scott inspires Currie Colts to Under-18 cup triumph

CURRIE Colts claimed the 2010 National Youth Under-18 Cup title at Murrayfield with a deserved 27-13 win over Dumfries Colts that stemmed from a powerful performance from their pack and the experience of their Scotland Under-18 international hooker Fergus Scott.

Dumfries, who are a young side for this age level, were unable to match the more physical Currie forwards in the set-piece and as a result could not win enough possession to use their talented backs. Nevertheless Dumfries, for whom their Scotland Under-17 trio of scrum-half, Scott Steele, centre Chris Auld and No 8 Callum Templeton put in telling performances, produced a dynamic game that deserved more than the one try they scored.

Currie looked winners from the kick-off as their big forwards powered towards the Dumfries line. But their immediate reward was limited to a penalty goal by their scrum half Joe Stachan, voted man-of-the-match.

Then after a break by stand-off Scott Mullins and series of drives close to the line, flanker Irving Hastie crashed over for the game's opening try. Dumfries, although struggling for possession hit back in similar fashion resulting in a close-range try in the corner for lock Chris Wickes, Jordan Kerr adding the touchline conversion. Just before the break, Currie made a decisive breakthrough with a try by skipper Fergus Scott converted by Stachan but just after the break Dumfries ate into the Currie lead with a Kerr penalty goal.

Currie then used their forward power to create a close range try for Stachan but again Dumfries hit back with another Kerr Penalty. That was the final points for the south-west side as Currie's forward strength from a driven line-out produced a fourth try, this time for their Edinburgh lock Callum Ormiston, Stachan adding the conversion to seal a fine win.
