Murray’s 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 victory was on the cards from the moment he broke the Canadian’s usually armour-plated serve in the first set. No matter what Raonic tried to do, Murray had an answer – the world No 2 was just better in every way. “I think I did the best I could,” Raonic said. “I tried to put the things together.

“I tried coming forward, putting pressure on him. He was playing much better than me off the baseline. He was more effective there.

“Probably I was a little too passive to start the match on his service games. But then I tried to turn that around, give myself two looks, but didn’t make the most of it. I tried to put together what I could, fought. It just didn’t work out.”

Those two looks were two break points in the third set. He had waited patiently for two hours and 12 minutes for those two glimmers of hope but when they came, he could do nothing with them – Murray would not let him. And once they were gone, Raonic never got another glimpse of chance.

“Every time you play him, you know he’s going to get more returns back than anybody else, alongside Novak [Djokovic]. That’s what these two guys, especially, do. You try to find a way around that.”

That said, the Canadian was not downcast. He is one of the game’s thinkers and he was going to go away and process every moment of the experience of his first major final. When he comes back, he thinks he will be better prepared and more ready to face the likes of Murray.

“I’m going to work on
everything,” he promised. “I’m not going to leave any stone unturned. I’m going to try to get myself back in this position, try to be better in this position. I haven’t learned it yet, but I’m going
to try to make sure I learn
everything I can.”
