Defeated Arcano to miss Guineas

ARCANO is to miss the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas after meeting with his first career defeat at Newbury on Saturday.

Brian Meehan's colt had won the Prix Morny last season in an unbeaten juvenile campaign and much was expected of him this campaign. But he was well beaten in the Greenham behind the Richard Hannon-trained duo of Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs.

Owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manager Angus Gold said: "He won't run in the English Guineas and we'll give him a bit longer. He'll either go for the Irish and the French Guineas or we may even wait until Ascot in June.

"I think Arcano needed it mentally more than physically."

Meanwhile, Ralph Beckett feels he has to run Puff in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas following her victory at Newbury on Saturday.

The Whitsbury trainer admitted being surprised she stayed the seven furlongs so well in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes at the weekend.

"There was nothing in her pedigree that said she would get seven, never mind a mile, but she clearly outstayed them on Saturday.

"We look like we are going to Newmarket and if the ground's fast that would be on our side," said Beckett.
