Darts: Victory over Muffin Man not a piece of cake for Barney

Popular Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld shook off some early rust to beat Steve Hine 3-1 and reach the second round of Ladbrokes.com PDC World Championships at the Alexandra Palace.

With the Dutchman struggling to hit his doubles, Hine, known as the "Muffin Man", went into a 2-0 lead in the first set before Van Barneveld appeared to find his range to level at 2-2. Hine, however, held his nerve to take the opening set 3-2.

After that, Van Barneveld began to show his class.

He claimed 140s at will to draw level at 1-1, then went 2-1 up against the throw in the third set and rammed home his advantage with the first 180 of the match.

He duly claimed the set for a 2-1 lead, then produced a ten-darter to go 2-0 up in the fourth. Hine found his first 180 of the match to pull one back against the throw and levelled the set at 2-2 before Van Barneveld raced through the deciding leg to seal his victory.

Colin Osborne saw off event debutant Chris Thompson 3-1. "The Wizard" took the first set 3-1, despite missing three shots at a double. The second set was equally comfortable for Osborne, who, despite needing seven attempts to hit double five to take the second leg, again took the set 3-1.

Thompson hit back to take the third set by the same scoreline, though, but six failed attempts at double six cost Thompson the opening leg of the fourth set and Osborne nipped in to win against the throw, before wrapping up the set 3-1.

Kevin McDine crushed Barrie Bates 3-1 in a dismal tussle.
