Darts: Champ Lewis into the last eight

Defending champion Adrian Lewis was the first man to book a quarter-final spot in the PDC World Darts Championship as he saw off Wayne Jones 4-0.

Lewis was in dominant form, claiming the first set 3-0 and dropping only four legs in total.

“It’s a great feeling to be through to the quarter-finals, and I’m on course to retain my title,” Lewis said. “I felt it was a good performance, I was particularly sharp on the doubles, which was the key to the win.”

He will face Terry Jenkins in the last eight, who beat Justin Pipe 4-1, delighting the crowd with a double-double finish.

In the first game of the evening Scotland’s Gary Anderson held off a stiff challenge from South African Devon Petersen to claim the final spot in the last 16.

Anderson arrowed in 11 maximum 180s but struggled to put away his doubles. His opponent however could not take advantage and fell to a 4-2 defeat.

The Scot said: “Devon missed a few doubles and let me in early on. But he started to play and it became very tough. These youngsters are all really good and they’re not scared on the big stages.”

Anderson will face Colin Lloyd, who beat Scott Rand 4-1.

Simon Whitlock claimed a place in the last 16 with a 4-1 victory over Steve Beaton.
