Capital cyclist James McCallum failed in his bid to repeat the 2007 win he posted in the IG London Nocturne at Smithfield Market despite a valiant effort in Saturday night’s event.

The Rapha Condor-JLT rider, who is the Scottish Criterium champion, has performed well so far in his circuit races this season without sealing a podium finish and he had hopes of putting that right in the floodlit race at the London venue.

McCallum was prominent through most of the race and was second with ten of the 36 laps left, but he was outpaced in the latter stages and crossed the line in 24th place. Tom Scully (Team Raleigh) took the honours ahead of Alex Dowsett (Movistar) in a tight finish.

Former City of Edinburgh rider Charline Joiner was 16th in the women’s race which was won by double Olympic gold medallist Laura Trott (Honda-Wiggle). But it was the performance of Edinburgh RC teenager Louise Borthwick that caught the eye as she took several big-name scalps on her way to finishing in 23rd place.
