Cycling: Successful night moves Martin to joint third in title bid

Capital rider Dave Martin (Bicycleworks) stepped up his challenge for the Meadowbank National Track League title with a useful points haul in last night’s round of racing.

Martin made a winning start when he took the honours in the 15-lap scratch race after league leader Bruce Croall (City of Edinburgh) crossed the line in first place but was relegated for dangerous riding.

Second place in the 35-lap points race moved Martin into joint third place in the table alongside Graeme McBride (Glasgow Wheelers) and one point behind Scott Macrae (Unattached).

Macrae finished fourth in the 35-lap event, third over 15 laps and second in the Devil Take the Hindmost. In the latter event, he was pipped by veteran rider Andy Laing (Musselburgh RCC).

Gus Gillies (Bicycleworks) extended his lead in the junior competition with a win in the handicap final, second place in the 15-lap scratch and an intermediate sprint bonus point.

Matthias Barnett (Edinburgh RC) was the top-scoring youth and now holds a tidy advantage at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, Anda-Jay Burgess (Sandy Wallace Cycles) had an impressive first outing in the women’s competition with a win and a second place finish.
