Cycling: Oliphant confirmed as the only Scot in Tour of Britain

Capital cyclist Evan Oliphant will be the only Scot in action at the Tour of Britain, which starts in Ipswich on Sunday.

Oliphant has been a regular in the race over recent seasons. His highlight being pipped for a stage win at Nottingham in 2005, with a young Mark Cavendish more than ten minutes down in sixth spot.

The 30-year-old races in the Team Raleigh squad, and will again face Cavendish as well as Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins – both in Team Sky.

While Oliphant is the only Scotsman in the race, the West Lothian outfit Endura Racing will be looking to make an impression with a line-up that features Spaniard Iker Camano, Australian Zak Dempster, German Paul Voss, and the English trio, Russell Downing, Ian Bibby and Jonathan Tiernan-Locke, last year’s king of the mountains winner.

The race will make a fleeting visit north of the border next Tuesday for the 153 kilometre stage from Jedburgh to Dumfries, and concludes in Guildford on Sunday September 16.
