Cycling: Manchester magic from Borthwick

Capital cyclist Louise Borthwick underlined her potential when she saw off a strong field of senior riders to take the honours in the third and final round of the Tameside Season Starters Series in Manchester.

The 16-year-old Edinburgh Road Club rider sustained a broken wrist when she crashed while competing at the Revolution Track Meeting in November, but she confirmed she had fully recovered from the injury with a solid start to the road season, and gave an indication of her good form when she finished fourth in the opening race of the circuit series earlier in the month.

Borthwick missed the second round but was back in action for the finale. She remained calm as several riders attacked, then hauled herself back into contention in the closing stages before snatching victory with a perfectly-timed sprint.

And not to be outdone, Borthwick’s team mate Sean Noon won a youths’ circuit race in Middlesborough. Noon, who rides for the club’s Martin Currie-sponsored youth squad, chalked up an impressive result at the Highfields Kitchens Spring Shield Race Series.

His next event will be the Youth Tour of Scotland in Perthshire next month.
