Froome, who succeeded Wiggins as the winner of cycling’s most prestigious tour in July, will bid to build on his triumph in Paris by adding road race gold in Tuscany. He features alongside the likes of Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Alex Dowsett and Geraint Thomas in the road race squad, with a final decision to be made on which eight of the 11 riders will compete. Wiggins will attempt to add world gold to his Olympic title in the time trial alongside Dowsett.

The World Championships run from 22-29 September, with Lizzie Armitstead heading up the British challenge in the women’s road race and Emma Pooley targeting the time trial, the event she won in 2010. GB’s junior world champion Lucy Garner also features in the road race squad. British Cycling performance manager Shane Sutton said: “We’ve got Olympic medallists, Tour de France winners and former world champions in
the mix.”
