Cycling: Ayre and Croall back at Meadowbank

City OF Edinburgh cyclists Kenny Ayre and Bruce Croall will be back on familiar territory tonight after a successful cross-border trip that yielded British Championship silver medals.

The duo combined to take second place in the national tandem sprint at Newcastle- under-Lyme on Sunday. They were beaten in the final by fellow Scot Neil Fachie and his pilot Barney Storey, who are building up to the Paralympics in London.

Ayre and Croall are expected to line up for tonight’s round of the Meadowbank National Track League (first race 7.15pm).

Meanwhile, another City of Edinburgh pair, Callum Skinner and John Paul, were in action as part of the Great Britain under-23 squad at the Cottbus Sprint cup in Germany over the weekend. Skinner posted the eighth quickest time in qualification, clocking 10.630 seconds, with world junior record holder Max Niederlag fastest in 10.250 seconds.

Skinner, 19, performed better than his seeding, taking fifth place in the final standings behind Sebastian Doehrer, who led a German clean sweep of the top four places.

After finishing outside the leading eight in qualifying, Paul also raised his performance in the knockout stages to take sixth place.
