Currie trio miss out as volcanic ash hits title race

CURRIE will be missing three players who are stranded abroad when they take on Boroughmuir in the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division 1 at Malleny Park tonight.

Andrew Binikos and Scotland Club international Mark Cairns are stuck in South Africa where they have been for the former's wedding and back-row James Taggart is in Barcelona with all their flights having been delayed due to the volcanic ash problems.

From the side that defeated West of Scotland so convincingly at the weekend to keep Currie top of the league, centre James Johnstone is out.

As a result Glasgow pro Chris Kinloch moves to centre with Jonny Smith at full-back. And with teenage stand-off Matt Scott still nursing a shoulder injury stand-in Graham White will continue in the pivotal position.

In the pack, two changes are made with Scotland Club international prop Alistair Hamilton and back-row Jamie Thomson dropping to the bench with Andrew Reekie and Mike Entwhistle replacing them. For Irishman Entwhistle it is his first start of the campaign.

Mid-table Boroughmuir have not played a league match for more than three weeks when they were humbled 43-11 at Dundee HSFP and again they may use the match – their last of the season – to blood some of their talented youngsters.

It also looks set be the last outing in Boroughmuir colours for hooker Shaun McMurchy who it is thought will be heading back to New Zealand when the season ends following spells at both Stewart's-Melville and Meggetland during his time in the capital.

Currie, who won the Scottish championship for the first time in their history two years ago, are locked in a tight battle with reigning champions Ayr for this year's title.

The west Edinburgh side currently lead the Millbrae outfit on points difference. Both clubs have 82 points from 18 games, with four games left to play.
