Curling: Place in the finals prove a step too far for Barr and Campbell in Perth

Edinburgh curlers Kerry Barr and Colin Campbell fell agonisingly short in their bids to reach the finals at the Scottish Championships in Perth

Barr completed the round-robin section in a three-way tie for third place and beat Jenny Martin and former world champion Jackie Lockhart to advance to the medal play-offs. That earned her a shot at 2011 European gold medallist Eve Muirhead, but the defending Scottish champion proved too strong, winning their semi-final 7-1 before beating Lockerbie’s Hannah Fleming 8-4 in
yesterday’s final.

Campbell, playing lead for
Aberdeen skip David Edwards, also made the knockout stages where he edged fellow Capital curler Ross Hepburn and Perth’s Warwick Smith 8-7.

Stirling’s Logan Gray got off to a flying start in the semis, leading 3-0 early on, but a triple at the seventh looked to have turned things Campbell’s way before Gray counted two stones at the last end to win 7-6. Gray was beaten 8-3 by holder Tom Brewster in the final.
