Curling: Dodds skips team to silver

Edinburgh curler Jennifer Dodds and her Scotland team-mates had to settle for silver at the World Junior Championships in Sochi, Russia.

The defending champions led by Lockerbie’s Hannah Fleming lost just one match en route to the final and beat Russia’s Alina Kovaleva 7-4 in the group stages, but the local skip got it right when it mattered most yesterday.

Fleming led 2-0 and 3-1 but needed a double at the tenth end to stay alive.

Kovaleva then scored a single at the first extra end to win 6-5.

“We’ve been playing well all week but we just weren’t firing as well as we had been in the final,” admitted Fleming. “You’ve got to hand it to Russia because they played well, but I’m really disappointed because overall I think we deserved to win but we just didn’t show it in the final.

“Maybe there was a bit of nerves but we still felt confident. That’s just curling for you.”

Perth’s 2012 bronze medallist Kyle Smith took gold in the men’s final after defeating Russia’s Evgeny Arkhipov 6-2.
