Curling: Dodds keeps Scots flying high in Sochi

CAPITAL curler Jennifer Dodds is still on target for next weekend’s final after helping Scotland to two more round robin victories at the World Junior Championships in Sochi, Russia yesterday.

Edinburgh College curler Dodds, Lauren Gray, Abi Brown and Lockerbie skip Hannah Fleming, who studies at Edinburgh’s Napier University, continued their impressive title defence by beating Russia’s Alina Kovaleva 7-4 and Canadian Corryn Brown 3-2 to top the group table with three wins out of three.

Their morning match with home favourite Kovaleva bizarrely began half an hour late after the drivers for both teams somehow got lost on their way to the Olympic Ice Cube curling centre – despite the 3000-capacity venue being just 1.5km from the Olympic Village where the athletes would have been based.

There were no travel problems last night although Brown stretched the Scots in a cagey tactical battle. It was 1-1 at halfway and still all-square after eight ends, but Fleming picked up a single stone at the last to extend Scotland’s 100
per cent record.
