Cross-country skier Dixon falls just short

A STIRRING finish from Aviemore cross-country skier Scott Dixon proved to be in vain as he bowed out of the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck.

Dixon, who normally competes in biathlon, was racing in yesterday’s sprint event at the Seefeld Arena and completed the 1km course in a time of 1:52.40 minutes, good enough for 33rd overall. However, with only the top 30 going through, Dixon was left to rue what might have been. Dixon, whose father Mike represented team GB at six Winter Olympics, remained upbeat however.

“I felt great in the sprint, all of my training was paying off and I felt like I flew round the course,” he said. “It’s just frustrating to hear that it wasn’t quite enough.”

Elsewhere, alpine skier Paul Henderson’s giant slalom campaign finished almost as soon as it began after he missed a gate in Patscherkofel.
