HOCKEY

Inverleith kept up their challenge on Subway indoor national league leaders Grove Menzieshill with back-to-back wins over Glynhill Kelburne and VWS Dundee Wanderers, winning 10-2 and 4-2.

Menzieshill beat Cala Edinburgh 11-1 and Western Wildcats 11-4, while Grange were held to a 6-6 by VWS Dundee Wanderers.

Scotland’s Robert Thornton set up a clash with reigning champion Adrian Lewis at the PDC World Championships at Alexandra Palace in London with a 3-1 win over Ian White.

But another Scot, Peter Wright, lost out 3-1 to Dutchman Jelle Klaasen while Ronnie Baxter went down 3-2 to Steve Farmer and Alan Tabarn beat Philippines No.1 Christian Perez 3-1.

JUDO

Edinburgh’s Euan Burton missed out on a medal at the Qingdao Grand Prix in China, his last competition of the year.

Burton lost to Russian Ivan Nifontov, the 2009 world champion, in the U-81kg event and finished fifth. The Scot had earlier beaten Uuganbaatar Otganbaatar from Mongolia and Argentina’s Emmanuel Lucenti.

CRICKET

Vernon Philander furthered his growing reputation as South Africa thumped Sri Lanka by an innings and 81 runs in the first Test at Centurion.

Philander completed the wide-margin victory with his tenth wicket of the match as Sri Lanka were skittled for 150 to lose inside three days. After taking five wickets in the first innings, Philander followed it up with figures of five for 49.
