Saltires look to fringe for Irish match

SALTIRES fringe players will get the chance to stake their claim for promotion in this week’s three-day clash with Ireland A at Uddingston.

Five uncapped players, including 16-year-old batting prospect Andrew Umeed, have been named in the Development XI for the match, which starts this morning. And places are up for grabs in next month’s Intercontinental Cup meeting with Canada.

National coach Pete Steindl said: “We’re taking the chance to look at a few players who are just underneath our senior Saltires and Lions squads. But it’s also a chance for more established guys who haven’t had much representative cricket this season.”

Saltires pace bowler Gordon Goudie will complete his recovery from a rib injury sustained almost three months ago. Goudie bowled for the first time in Sunday’s Regional Series fixture and Steindl said: “He wasn’t quite up to full pace but he is looking good again.”

There is also a chance for Qasim Sheikh to earn a senior recall after an absence of almost two years. Now playing club cricket in Staffordshire, the former Clydesdale batsman’s two international centuries came in I-Cup fixtures. Along with Umeed, Michael Leask, Umair Mohammed, Josh Edwards and Aman Bailwal are the other uncapped players. Ireland have included former World Cup captain Trent Johnston.
