Evans bowls over Kenya to lift Scots

The Derbyshire bowler’s 6-30 helped the Scots dismiss their rivals for just 101, setting up a first innings lead of 111 runs. By the close Preston Mommsen’s side had tightened their grip by reaching 149-4 – a lead of 260 runs.

The Kenyan batsmen dug in at the start of the day but Evans took the wicket of Hiren Varaiya, caught behind by Craig Wallace. Then Majid Haq had Irfan Karim caught at short leg by Freddie Coleman and added the key scalp of Duncan Allan, who had faced 89 balls for his 32 runs.

In a dramatic post-lunch session, six Kenya wickets fell in less than 14 overs, Kenya slumping from 68-4 to 101 all out.

Haq completed his own three-wicket haul when Mommsen held a superb diving catch at slip to remove Tanmay Mishra. Evans then took control with five wickets, trapping Collins Obuya and Nehemiah Odhiambo lbw and clean-bowling Rakep Patel, Nelson Odhiambo and Elijah Otieno. His figures are the best by a Scot in cup history.

However, Scotland’s hopes of building a big lead were dented when Coleman was lbw before a run had been scored. Wallace, having hit one six over long-on, also departed in the over before tea.

Ewan Chalmers and Richie Berrington then produced the biggest partnership of the match, adding 71 for the third wicket, Chalmers finishing unbeaten on 79 with eight boundaries.
