Cricket: Sheridan makes his Poloc bow

SCOTLAND spinner Keith Sheridan remained loyal to Poloc in spite of a spate of approaches from more fashionable clubs during his glittering career in the 1990s and the subsequent decade.

Now, in the wake of his retirement, the Shawholm side are hoping their newly-signed Sheridan – also a slow left-arm bowler – can also make a big impression.

Euan of that ilk makes his league debut in today’s home-turf West First Divison tussle with Stenhousemuir after moving across the city from Glasgow Accies.

Poloc spokesman Keith Young said: “We are also looking forward to having overseas amateur Glenton Stuurman in action.

“He is an Academy player at South Western Districts in South Africa where Poloc’s 2006 and 2007 professional Garry Hampson is head coach.

“Glenton is a seam-bowling all-rounder who opens the batting and bowling.”

Young added: “Stenhousemuir have also recruited strongly over the winter and returning professional Rushdi Jappie is a proven performer.

“They also have two former Dunfermline men Yasar Arfat and Amir Shahzad, so they should start as favourites.”

The other eye-catching tie in the West is Kelburne’s clash with Paisley rivals Ferguslie at Whitehaugh.

In the East Division, both Fife clubs – Falkland and Freuchie – will be looking to make the most of home advantage when they square up to Fauldhouse and Edinburgh Accies respectively.

Corstorphine are in a rebuilding phase and they entertain Penicuik, while SMRH entertain West Lothian.
