Cricket: Scott McElnea shines for Warriors on wet weekend

ROOKIE seamer Scott McElnea emerged as the hero on his home turf as Western Warriors crushed Eastern Knights to lift the Cricket Scotland Regional Series crown.

The Ayr youngster snapped up three quick wickets to restrict the visitors to 126 all out at Cambusdoon. Majid Haq (46 not out) and Calum MacLeod (36) had been the standout batsmen in the victors’ 201 for eight.

Then McElnea’s triple burst prevented the Knights from ever threatening to reach the target.

The only resistance came from Ryan Flannigan, Stuart Chalmers and Simon Smith, who all made it into the 20s, but couldn’t kick on from there.

Meanwhile, Scottish cricket suffered its first complete washout of the season on Saturday when all 16 scheduled CSL fixtures were called off.

The Granite City derby between Aberdeenshire and Stoneywood-Dyce in the Eastern Premier Division was the only game which got underway, but it lasted for fewer than 18 overs.

Saturday’s washout brings to 36 the total number of games that have been hit by one of the wettest starts to a season in living memory.
